Should I buy an electric car? Top advantages and disadvantages

In this era of global warming and environmental consciousness, many people are choosing to go green. This has been made possible through the invention of electric vehicles. The use of electric cars is becoming increasingly common in recent years. From their design to the infrastructure, significant changes are happening. Electric cars charge more quickly than gas-powered ones, and they also have fewer maintenance costs. Today, most car manufacturers are now focusing on designing electric cars that are both powerful and cost-effective. With these new developments in the industry, it’s easy to see why an increasing number of people would want to switch to electric vehicles. 

The increasing awareness about climate change and pollution are making us think about moving to a more eco-friendly world. Electric vehicles offer a better and cleaner alternative and a lot of people are taking advantage of this. Despite these advantages, however, there are still several disadvantages to using an electric vehicle. Even though electric cars have been around for over a century now, they have yet to be perfected. Here, are a few things to consider to decide if an electric car is right for you.

Advantages of using electric vehicles/cars

1. Less Pollution

Let's start with the obvious. Electric cars are the more suitable option for the environment. Using less fuel and eliminating exhaust emissions means less noise pollution as well as less carbon dioxide in our air. These cars can also help reduce our air pollution with the release of that dreaded nitrogen oxide. The release of this gas is a byproduct of fossil fuel combustion and leads to a big increase in our ozone levels.

2. Saves the environment

Electric vehicles are much cleaner than gas cars. This means less pollution and more money saved for the health benefits and their removal of gasoline tailpipes. Not only that, the research says that electric vehicles can get a lot more miles on a single charge. By the time these vehicles are old enough to become obsolete, they would have given the world clean air and a very substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. 

Electric cars are much more efficient than cars run on fossil fuels. This has several benefits in that it reduces your dependence on oil and that they are much cleaner than your traditional gasoline vehicles.

3. Fuel-efficient

With more energy being wasted when fossil fuels are burnt, the first generation of e-vehicles will be much more efficient than a fossil-fueled vehicle. Electronic vehicles are designed to save energy. They're much more fuel-efficient. According to a study done by the Union of Concerned Scientists, electric cars in the United States use 17 per cent less energy to go the same distance as a comparable gasoline-powered car. This translates to a CO2 emission reduction of 50 to 75 per cent.

The cars last for much longer than gasoline-powered cars.The e-cars have a 10-year life span and sometimes more. This means you can get more years out of your e-car than the vehicle you may be driving now. 

4. An electric vehicle is much faster than a regular gas-run car

Having an electric vehicle is much faster than standard gas-run vehicles. Because there's no gas involved, you can go farther in a lot less time. Their maintenance and repair cost is low compared to conventional cars. The parts and services that are needed for an e-vehicle are often comparable to the cost of a conventional car. It is better for the environment, it is cheaper over time, and they are typically more reliable than conventional cars.

5. Recharging your e-car battery is almost non-existent

There's no more stopping for gas stations because electric cars have zero emissions. They don't create pollution when you take the vehicle into the mountains, or even outside of the city. An e-car will only need 30 minutes. This means, that you can make your commute less stressful by going on long journeys without worrying about how many miles you can get. 

6. Better for the health of the human race

While e-vehicles are great for the environment, they are also great for the health of the human race. With an increase in health issues for our population, the use of e-vehicles is not only a great option but a necessity. As long as e-vehicles are used, the pollution will slowly decline. We know that electric vehicles produce less harmful air emissions. As the number of e-vehicles increase, so does the pollution.

7. Electric vehicles provide much better fuel economy

Everyone knows that driving a fossil-fuel-powered vehicle is harmful to the environment. Driving this way is also expensive in terms of the amount of gas you must use per day. Buying an e-car will save you a ton of money as you will spend less on fuel. You will also avoid other gas consumption such as noise, emissions, and congestion. More people are switching to e-vehicles because they will save money and the environment. If you are thinking about buying an electric vehicle, there's a chance it could be easier than you think.

Also, with an e-car, the average driver can get 100 miles per gallon while on the road. Compare that to a standard car that will only get 40 to 45 miles per gallon on the road. These stats are not just for the Chevy Volt but any e-car as well. The rise in the popularity of these cars shows that they work very well. Also, electric cars have far fewer moving parts making maintenance easier.

8. Electric vehicles are affordable

Electric vehicles are getting more affordable each year with companies offering rebates on new models. The government even subsidizes some buyers. The e-car companies are becoming more eco-friendly and all of them make sense. Over the next decade, they will be a lot better for the environment.

9. Improved lives

According to Bloomberg News, using electric vehicles has contributed to the GDP increase for some European countries, like Estonia. This is because of the jobs that are being created and the money that is being used to spend. Electric vehicles may not be the future of cars but they are the future of the economy. 

10. Electric Vehicles are a key part of our future

The use of fuel sources will eventually be phased out, but there will be a transition period before it's a simple matter of plugging in and driving. In the near term, vehicle fleet owners can go ahead and phase out their old diesel or petrol cars and start using modern e-cars instead. Hybrid-electric vehicles have fuel-cell power sources, and plug-in hybrids will be the ones that last the longest.

Electric cars are a popular topic among those who are concerned with the environment. Almost every major automaker produces these cars or are planning to release them within the next few years. Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, Volvo, Mitsubishi, and many more are all joining the race to get their hands on the electric car market. 

The downside of using electronic vehicles

1. Lack of charging stations 

Though you can charge your vehicles at home there must be charging stations that are currently absent. However, in developed countries such as the United States as there are only about 18,500 charging stations. That is not enough to cover the country and that is about to increase because more companies are starting to develop the infrastructure. 

2. Driving an e-vehicle is difficult

Many people don't even realize that driving electric cars isn't easy. They always believe it's way easier than driving a combustion engine car. All it takes is the drive to pick up the car from the dealership and then you're ready to go. With a regular car, you need to put in a CD, get the key out, turn the key, and go. If you have an electric car, you can't drive the car until you plug it in. That's why a lot of people don't know how to drive an e-vehicle. I can count the number of times I've seen an e-vehicle driven on the road and I count all the times I've seen someone drive a regular car. This is an advantage for regular cars and an disadvantage for e-vehicles.

3. The lack of comfort of using electric vehicles

E-vehicles can get extremely hot while running. It is the same problem as conventional cars. If your car runs hot, you'll have a problem cooling it down. This can lead to problems with the battery, especially if your car is used a lot. The battery will eventually overheat and you'll need a new battery. To avoid this problem, you should consider buying an electric car with a long-range. It will run cooler and longer.

4. Driving range is limited  

Electric cars also have their limits when it comes to driving range. An electric car can go over 200 miles, but many times those same cars only reach 100 miles. At the same time, e-cars can be more expensive to own and have limited battery life. Electronic cars are less efficient than gasoline cars when it comes to driving. To make the most of the car's energy, an electric car would need to go about 30-40 miles per hour, which means the cars will need to be recharged as you drive.

You can't talk about electric cars without mentioning the battery. These are just things that you don't think of when you think about an electric car but are vital to any electric car. Lithium-ion batteries are cheaper to produce but require a lot of space to store and charge the battery. For these cars to work, we need to have cars that can charge up the battery at a steady pace, making it possible for people to own more than one car. 

6. A bit noisy

One of the biggest problems with the use of electronic vehicles is that they don't run as quietly as traditional cars do. There is an electricity source involved that will result in higher energy consumption. There is also the cost of the electric cars that will be passed on to the consumer. Lastly, they do have the disadvantage of not having the same features as conventional cars and cannot run in inclement weather.

7. Electric cars are expensive

Another disadvantage of e-vehicles is they are expensive, even for the cheaper models. Though e-vehicles don't cost much to run but surely cost much when you are buying it.

The most obvious disadvantage is the purchase price. Unlike a regular car that can be bought and driven off the lot, the initial cost of an e-car is significantly higher than a regular car. It's important to remember though that the price of e-cars will drop over time so it shouldn't be considered a deterrent from owning one. 


The world is changing and we need to change with it. We can no longer rely on fossil fuels to power our vehicles and we must find a way to make the air cleaner. The car will soon become more of an option than a necessity. With the rise in the use of e-vehicles, there's been a drop in oil consumption as well as an increase in jobs for those who work on these new systems. 

Electric cars have not taken off as quickly as some would have hoped for, however, that doesn't mean that it's not worth it. People have been debating the pros and cons of the e-car for years and it will be years before we will truly be driving gas-powered vehicles off the market. But, since it hasn't become mainstream, those who are in the automotive field have a unique advantage over most of their peers. These professionals know more about the e-car industry and when it is perfected, they will reap the benefits.
