Did you know that nine out of ten people do not have access to safe air globally?

According to the National Health Portal of India, air pollution causes nearly 7 million deaths every year. The air pollution level is increasing at an alarming rate each year. The multiple pollutant particles present in the air are small enough to pass through mucus and the natural barriers of our body, to go inside and harm our heart, lungs, and even brain.

National Pollution day is celebrated in memory of lives lost in Bhopal Gas Tragedy. The unfortunate incident happened 37 years ago on the night of 2-3 December, and it's still considered one of the worst industrial disasters. We honour this day to create awareness towards increasing pollution levels and their effect on day-to-day life.

With over 4 million people dying from indoor air pollution, it's clear that our indoor is not much safe than outdoors. Notably, the coronavirus pandemic has worsened the situation. Studies have proven that people with heart and lung conditions are vulnerable to a more severe form of Covid-19.

Thus if we care about our overall health, it is essential to care about the air we breathe. Advancements made in technology have allowed us to monitor the air pollution level in our houses, and with that, portable air purifiers are becoming the need of the hour.

Things to consider before choosing the right air purifier

  1. Calculate the size of the room using the air purifier. An excellent clean air delivery rate (CADR) rating equals at least two-thirds of the room's area. For example, a space that measures 10 feet by 15 feet has an area of 150 square feet. Therefore, a good CADR rating for an air purifier would be a smoke CADR of at least 100.
  2. Noise level. Air purifiers with a noise level of 50 dB are suitable for most living spaces as it's almost quiet and modest.
  3. Cost-effective. Air purifiers need electricity. Thus it's important to get an energy-efficient one and won't affect your monthly budget too much.
  4. Avoid ozone-producing air purifiers - some air purifiers, especially those using electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, or ultraviolet lamps, produce ozone.

Now, against popular beliefs, air purifiers aren't just some big ugly device that will not go along with your home decor. If picked carefully, air purifiers can add more charm to that modern indoor setting. Some things to look for-

  • The size of the air purifier to fit in your room perfectly
  • How many colours the air purifier comes in (the more is better)
  • Colourful night light would be great
  • Noise level and filters efficiency
