Indian-Origin Scientist Joyeeta Gupta Awarded Spinoza Prize, the Dutch Nobel Prize

Indian-origin scientist Joyeeta Gupta was awarded the prestigious Spinoza Prize On June 7, 2023, which is considered the highest distinction in Dutch science. The prize, sometimes referred to as the 'Dutch Nobel Prize', was presented to Gupta for her exceptional, groundbreaking, and inspiring scientific work focused on promoting a just and sustainable world. 

As a recipient of the Spinoza Prize, Joyeeta Gupta will be awarded 1.5 million euros, which she will use for scientific research and activities related to knowledge utilization. The prize will be officially presented to her on October 4 at a ceremony.

Joyeeta Gupta's educational background includes studies at Delhi University, Gujarat University, and Harvard Law School. She obtained her PhD from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. 

Apart from her professorship at the University of Amsterdam, Gupta is also a professor at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education. Her research is interdisciplinary and brings together various scientific disciplines, including international law, economics, political science, development studies, and environmental studies.

Throughout her career, Joyeeta Gupta has been dedicated to addressing climate change and its associated challenges through good governance and seeking justice for both people and the planet .

She has been a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1988 to 2014, contributing to the IPCC's work that was recognized with the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, shared with former US Vice President Al Gore.
