Raising a child has its challenges, Isn’t it?

It cannot be denied that parenting is one of the most difficult parts of adulthood. Once a parent, always a parent. That moment when you hold your baby in your arms is when your life changes forever. Your decisions in the future will always be impacted by this third additional member of your family.

It is said that being a mother is a beautiful blessing. Right from raising your child in the womb for nine long months to watching him/ her grow into a fantastic human being, motherhood is a never-ending journey.

We have grown up to see our mothers sacrificing their own needs for us and forgetting the fact that before being mothers they are human beings with their own needs and desires. Meet Nikita Mathur, a travel blogger with her three-year-old son, Ahaan. Being an avid reader, a binge-watcher for Korean dramas, and a traveling mom, Nikita is setting goals for all the new moms and to-be-moms out there. We got into a conversation with Nikita and she was more than happy to tell us about embracing motherhood, not compromising on self-care, equal parenthood, and much more.

Here are a few excerpts from the interview:-

1) Hello Nikita, thank you for connecting with us. We love how you are inspiring all the millennial mothers out there. Please tell us what pushed you towards being a mom blogger? How did you start?

Well, honestly, being a mom blogger was not a part of my plan. Yes, I did have a public Instagram account. I left my job when Ahaan was born planning to join back in a couple of months however things took a different turn during the pandemic. With being stuck at home with my family, I started conducting different activities for him in the house. I started researching about the activities, the eating pattern of kids, and whatnot. During this period, I realized there is a lot of information that is not out there and parents are unaware of it. My journey as a mom blogger started as a mother who was just curious to know how being a mother is and what is best for my child. And this is how my page for travel stories became about my story of being a parent.

2) That sounds pretty great. Nikita, please tell us about the challenges you faced as a mom blogger when you were starting.

One thing I am very glad about here is that as a child Ahaan has always been eating on his own. This is something that used to amaze a lot of people in the beginning because kids usually don’t have their food, but thankfully, making him eat was not a big concern for me. As a mom blogger, it became easier for me because I was practicing what I preached. Practice is the key here.

Once people start seeing the results, it’s easy for them to believe what you are saying.

3) I am very keen to ask you this question. How do you feel parenting has changed with the passing years? How you were raised V/S How Ahaan is being raised?

As a mother, I feel that it is very important for a child to experience equal parenting. When I was a child, parenting was something that was looked upon as a mother’s job. It is just how you look at things. My father used to take care of things at work and finances while my mother would take care of me.

This notion of a mother being majorly responsible for a child’s well-being has changed with time and I am very grateful for that. Parenting is no longer limited to being a mother’s job now. When it comes to Ahaan, my husband is equally involved as a parent, be it taking care of his outdoor activities, playing with him, or taking care of his salon appointments.

Another difference, which I would like to point out here is that parents today have started being gentler with their kids. Not many families practice this but yes some of them do. Scolding and hitting your kids is not a part of parenting. Yes, we tend to lose control sometimes but this should not become a routine.

4) A mother needs to take care of herself as well be it taking a day off or going on vacation. So apart from being Ahaan’s mother, tell us what is Nikita Mathur like?

Being a big movie buff, I love to watch series. Recently, I have been hooked to K-dramas and I try to watch something whenever, I find time/ Apart from that, I love traveling and like to take mini-vacations from my daily routine. Before Ahaan, it used to be me and my husband traveling, and we have kept that tradition maintained. My son is a tiny addition to my travel plans and we have a lot of fun. However, I make sure to take out some time for myself and go on solo trips as well.

We can't go together as a family every time but yes, that is when my me-time steps in. In these three years of parenting, I am glad I have not lost myself as a person. I may have tweaked my schedule but taking care of yourself is equally important for a mother.

5) Tell us about one thing you like about being a mother.

Well, I would say that watching a child grow is the most beautiful part of parenthood would be a small child who could barely move on his turns into this human being who talks to you, argues with you, and loves you. This feeling is something a mother cherishes forever.

6) Lastly, one piece of advice for mothers and to-be-mothers.

Well, there is something, I wish someone has told me earlier, treat your child as an individual. He has his own needs and desires. He is going to grow up and eventually develop his personality someday. Do not forget that.

As parents, we support our children but let them explore things on their own.

Motherhood has changed a lot with the passing time and we shower lots of love on women like Nikita who are doing their bit by giving in their best as a mother and a woman.
