“When you’re comfortable in your skin, you look beautiful, regardless of any flaws” - Emily Deschanel.

Nobody is born perfect. We all have imperfections, some are visible and some are hidden. Dealing with flaws isn’t always easy. It’s human nature to sulk and hide imperfections. But you know what a game-changer is really? Embracing your flaws and imperfections. The day you start doing that, you’ll be in a better place physically and mentally.

Allow me to explain with an example. Embracing your imperfections is very similar to this Japanese art form called Kintsugi. It is a method of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas with gold, silver or platinum lacquer. Instead of discarding the cracked pottery, it is made more beautiful by painting designs on it and highlighting the flaws. This teaches us a very important life lesson. Even if a person has flaws, he/she is still beautiful. Instead of getting angry at yourself for your flaws, accept it and you will definitely feel more confident.

As women, it is also very important for us to feel comfortable in our own skin. Irrespective of your colour, weight and height, develop self-love and self-esteem. Of course, it’s easier said than done. Therefore, through this blog, we aim at discussing how you can embrace your imperfections.

Tips to Embrace your Imperfections

  • Your imperfections make you human

At the end of the day, we’re all humans and humans are messy people. Honestly, imperfections make a person more authentic. If you find a friend or colleague’s life perfectly put-together and efficient, don’t get carried away or desire to be in their shoes. They too have flaws, it’s just that they may be hiding them. Having a perfect life with no flaws is actually boring. Being yourself in a crowd will actually take the pressure of perfection off the table. When you accept your peculiarities and practice self-acceptance, that’s when you get to lead a meaningful life.

  • Clean your social media feeds

A major reason why we’re in constant self-doubt is because of social media. Unfortunately, it sets unrealistic standards in terms of beauty and body portrayals. Everybody desires to look a “certain” way. If scrolling through social media makes you feel bad about your life or the way you look, you need to clean your feed from this negativity. Instead, follow content that motivates you to change. Follow people with real stories rather than influencers who simply airbrush every photo of them. Trust me, you will feel better about yourself, not worse.

  • Maintain a gratitude journal

Instead of focusing on what’s bothering you, focus on what you have and what you should be grateful for. Maintaining a gratitude journal is a good way to do that. If not every day, once a week, jot down the things you are truly grateful for. Ask yourself – would you have great health and a beautiful, caring family, or a perfect body and a beautiful face with no one to acknowledge it. Of course, you’d choose the former. When you start seeing the good in the imperfect, you will come to realise that your life isn’t as bad as you thought it to be.

  • Let go of the constant mirror work

Another way to embrace your flaws is by letting go of the constant “mirror work”. There are some people who start checking themselves out at the sight of the mirror. While it’s not a bad thing, it can weigh you down. If there are certain body parts you don’t like or if your face is acne-prone, looking in the mirror will just make you feel worse about yourself. As humans, we often tend to look at ourselves in the mirror from the least flattening angles. Instead, look at yourself in dim lighting. This way, you will tend to enjoy the way you look.

  • Make your flaws famous

Thankfully, the rules of social media are changing. Famous celebrities are embracing body positivity and are telling the world how they’re not ashamed of their imperfections. When in doubt, make your flaws famous. Yes, it works! In fact, Instagram recently saw a whole acne positivity movement. Celebrities and influencers were posting their acne-full faces with the caption “pimples are in”. Making your flaws famous will help you realise that you’re not alone in whatever battle you’re facing. Some famous celebrities who have openly accepted their imperfections are Lady Gaga, Genelia D’Souza, Sameera Reddy and Kusha Kapila among others.

Reasons It’s Important to Embrace Your Imperfections

Here are a few reasons why you should start embracing your imperfections:

  • You tend to feel lighter and happier

When you start making peace with your imperfections, you tend to feel less stressed. It also helps you learn and grow. You soon tend to let go of perfectionism and that’s when you will start feeling happier and more content with who you are and what you’ve got.

  • You become who you are

Though you think your flaws define you, they are not as bad as you think they are. If you keep trying to get rid of them, you will soon lose the real essence of who you really are. It might sound a bit cliché but it is your weaknesses and strengths that make up who you really are.

  • More people appreciate you

There is a misconception that imperfections in oneself can take people away from you. However, that’s not accurate. When you start accepting your imperfections, more people are drawn towards you. What may be a flaw for you, may be a desire for many people. Thus, flaws are not always what we assume. People think differently and thus they might tend to admire you.

Final Thoughts

Always remember, your flaws and imperfections make you real. It’s okay to improve on a certain area to fulfil your vision or in case you want to become a better version of yourself. However, keep in mind that some shortcomings are meant to remain a part of you forever. To lead a fulfilling life, embrace your imperfections like a queen.

Be FLAWSOME.
