"The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less" — Socrates

If you’ve always wanted to build a capsule wardrobe then you’ve come to the right place. And if you are new to the concept, then fret not for we will tell you all that you need to know about starting one. Get your pens & notepads out and keep an open mind, because this may revolutionise the way you consume fashion.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is essentially a collection of versatile clothing items that will not go out of fashion and that you will love to wear for a long time. It promotes sustainability, helps you discover your personal style while keeping you away from overindulging in ever-changing trends. And as to how many products or items you can include in your capsule wardrobe - this will depend on a whole lot of factors like what is your lifestyle like and what you need. And a quick research on the internet can help you determine how many items would suit your needs the best. For us, a good mix of 40-50 items - including clothes, shoes and accessories works like a charm. Your capsule collection can be altered & rotated every 3-4 months with the changing seasons.

What’s the goal of a capsule wardrobe and who should create one?

The aim of a capsule wardrobe is pretty straightforward and simple: it is to minimize the amount of money you spend on clothing items.  And not just that, having a definite set of clothing items to choose from will also help you save a LOT of time when you are dressing up. So, if you are guilty of spending a lot of money on clothes that you never wore or are spending way too much time in front of your wardrobe deciding what to wear - then this is just what you need! What’s cooler is the fact that when you have lesser clothes to choose from, you naturally get more creative in the way you style your outfits and find different ways to wear the same thing. This way you’ll love every outfit you wear, feel good and look absolutely fabulous!

Are you excited with everything that you’ve heard about a capsule wardrobe so far? And curious about how to create one? Then here’s a step-by-step guide to help you out:

1. Take a look at what’s in your closet:

The first & foremost thing that you’ll have to do is revisit your closet and see what you already have. Instead of mindlessly buying more things, spend a few hours and see how you can mix and match stuff that you already own. Get creative! And we promise you’ll have a lot of fun in the process.

2. Clean out your closet:

Now that you know what’s in it, it’ll help you with the next step in the process - which is decluttering & purging. Make three piles of the stuff you own -

  1. Items that you love wearing & are keeping for sure.
  2. Items that you’re not sure of or that need mending/fixing or upcycling.
  3. Items that you are ready to let go of. You can pass it on to friends & family, donate or even sell. A good thumb rule to help you decide on the giveaway pile is that if you haven’t worn a piece of clothing for over a year, you probably won’t wear it in the future.

3. Find your style:

Now that you revisited your wardrobe you’ll be able to figure out the styles & items that you love wearing. Identify and take note of the colours, brands and type of clothes you like wearing. Also, take note of what you don’t like wearing from your giveaway or donate pile. This way you can identify what to buy and what not to buy and avoid wasting your money on things that you don’t need or that don’t fit your aesthetic or lifestyle.

4. Shop, only what you need & when you need it:

This is a step which we recommend you don’t do often. Go shopping only if you really need something. Since you already have your style figured out, shopping will be an easy and fun thing to do. And if you’re still confused while making a purchase try to ask the following questions to yourself: ‘’Do I need this in my wardrobe?’’, ‘’Will I feel good wearing this?’’, ‘’Can this item be styled with things I already have in my wardrobe?’’. Also, another thing to remember is that you will always need to prioritise quality over quantity. Keep in mind the fabrics of new clothing that you buy - go for natural ones rather than synthetic ones. Check if the piece is made well - look at the seams and overall finishing of the product. Support and shop from good labels which are eco-conscious & sustainable. It may feel pricey in the beginning but you’ll notice the worth and value of a product when it lasts you a long time and gives you a lot of joy every time you wear it.

5. Your capsule wardrobe is ready to go!
