Independence Day 2023: Saluting the Wives of Martyrs Who Joined the Army

1. Colonel Ravinderjit Randhawa

It takes a lot of bravery to step onto a battlefield that took away someone you love. But that's exactly what Ravinder Jeet Randhawa did. She decided to join the army eight months after her husband Major Sukhwinder Jeet Randhawa died leaving behind a one-year-old daughter.

She became a lieutenant colonel, and she was the first Veer Nari, or martyr's widow, to do so. Her husband had shown remarkable courage, camaraderie, and sacrifice, earning him the prestigious Kirti Chakra, one of the nation's highest awards for bravery. In April 1998, about a year after her husband's passing, Ravinder accepted the medal on his behalf while dressed in her Officers Training Academy (OTA) uniform. She wanted to continue his legacy and carry forward the torch he left behind.

It wasn't an easy journey for Ravinder Jeet. At that time, there were very few female officers in the Army, and she was already 28 years old when her husband passed away. The cut-off age to join the Army was 25. However, her determination was unwavering. She knew her husband wanted their child to grow up in an Army background as it was a special and beautiful organization. With the help of her father-in-law, who was a former Army man, and Ranjana Malik, wife of the then Army chief General Ved Prakash Malik, Ravinder's case was taken up with the defense ministry, and a special waiver was arranged.

In December 1997, Ravinder cleared the Service Selection Board exam and joined the OTA in Chennai in March 1998. Despite being a single mother, she never asked for any relaxation in her duties. Ravinder belonged to a family of athletes, and her military training made her even stronger. She became a scuba diver and participated in multiple marathons, including one in the icy heights of Ladakh.

Ravinder Jeet Randhawa's story is one of extraordinary courage, determination, and resilience. 2. Lieutenant Nitika Kaul

3. Captain Shalini Singh

At just 19 years old, she married Major Avinash Bhadauria. They were a young couple with dreams of a beautiful future together. But fate had a different plan. At 23, Major Avinash Bhadauria became a martyr, fighting bravely in Doda, Kashmir, against a group of terrorists while serving with the 8 Rashtriya Rifles Unit. The news shattered her heart, leaving her widowed at such a tender age.

Determined to honor her husband's sacrifice, she took a bold step. Leaving her post-graduation studies midway, she set her sights on joining the Indian Army. But the path was not easy. She faced countless hurdles, including the daunting SSB interview. With unwavering determination, she appeared and cleared the interview. But that was not all - she had to navigate the challenge of bringing her young toddler and her parents along for the week-long interview process.

On 7th September 2002, her dream became a reality. She was officially inducted as an officer in the Indian Army - Captain Shalini. Her courage and dedication were evident as she embarked on this new journey, fulfilling her late husband's legacy. For five years, she served with pride and honor in the Indian Army, carrying out her duties with unwavering commitment. Finally, after her remarkable service, Captain Shalini decided to retire, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and resilience that will continue to inspire for generations to come.

4. Lieutenant Rigzin Chorol

The news, shared by the official Indian Army Corps, has spread like wildfire, and for all the right reasons! Soon, she will embark on an incredible journey by joining the Officers' Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai for military training. Her ultimate goal is to become an officer in the Indian Army - a dream she is all set to turn into reality.

But here's the truly groundbreaking part - Rigzin Chorol is about to make history! Once she completes her training, she will become the first-ever Ladakhi woman officer in the Indian Army. Her determination and spirit have become an example for everyone in Ladakh. With her unwavering resolve, Rigzin has not only honored her late husband's legacy but also paved the way for women in her community to aspire to serve their nation as well.
