Finding a tailor can be really hard, especially when you've just moved to a new place where everyone is a stranger. This is my story of finding a good ladies tailor.

When I first moved to Delhi for my first job, I was filled with anxiety and questions. What would it be like? How do people in Delhi live? As time passed, I became more comfortable in my surroundings. One day, I received a wedding invitation from a colleague at work. I decided to wear a saree—a traditional outfit—but I had never worn one without my mother's help. I sought guidance from my mother on phone, watched several YouTube videos, and even asked my male friends (who surely had no idea how to wear a saree), but found no satisfactory solution.

On YouTube, I stumbled upon a video about ready-to-wear sarees, and this gave me an idea. However, a new problem arose—I didn't know any good tailor in Delhi. So, I turned to Google and found a tailor.

Wait! I won't reveal the tailor's name until I share my journey of finding them.

How Did I Find The Correct Tailor?

At first, I tried asking locals, hoping that they could provide some recommendations. However, everyone I asked had a different suggestion, and it quickly became clear that personal preferences played a large part in their recommendations.

Finally, after hours of scrolling and research, I found a tailoring service named Silailor. They had numerous positive reviews, and one aspect that particularly caught my attention was their offering of a 'doorstep service'. This meant that they would come to my location for measurements, as well as for pickup and delivery, which was a huge convenience for me.

Things I Checked Before Hiring A Tailor

1 - Reviews and Ratings: Checking reviews can be a double-edged sword, as many online businesses may add fake reviews. However, there's a way around this. Look for common phrases or words across multiple reviews—both positive and negative. If you notice similar patterns, chances are you're reading genuine reviews. During my research, I noticed that the tailor I mentioned earlier charges a bit more than others, but their service is premium and their reviews reflected this.

2 - Experience and Expertise: Have I mentioned my profession yet? Naah, I haven’t. I am a content creator, and as such, I have a good understanding of how the internet world words. It can be quite fluid—what you see one moment can be totally different the next. Therefore, when looking for a tailor, I prioritized experience and expertise. To gauge this, I asked as many questions as I could to know their level of experience.

3 - Recommendations: Word-of-mouth suggestions from friends, family, or colleagues can be helpful when in finding a reliable tailor. However, in my case, I didn't receive any personal recommendations, leading me to seek an online tailor instead. If you find yourself in a similar situation, feel free to skip this step.

4 - Communication: If a tailor cannot understand your requirements, they won't be able to craft your clothes to your satisfaction. And this level of understanding typically comes with experience.

5 - Pricing: While high-quality tailoring may be worth paying a bit more for, it’s important to find a service that fits within your budget.

6 - Turnaround Time: In my experience, I've noticed many tailors in my city making false promises about timely delivery of stitched clothes. Ask about the tailor's turnaround time. If you need something done quickly, ensure they can meet your deadline.

7 - Fittings: Fitting is one’s personal preference. Some people prefer a loose fit, while others do not. Therefore, it's essential to communicate your preferred fit to your tailor. Moreover, a good tailor will share his/her perspective. If they don't, it could be a red flag.

8 - Portfolio: Regardless of whether you choose an online or offline tailoring service, you should always request to see a portfolio or previous work. For example, if you visit a local tailoring shop, you can notice the clothes on display to assess the quality of the stitching. You can also see their sewing machine, as it plays a vital role in the quality of the stitching.

9 - Guarantee: Ask if the tailor offers any guarantee for their work. If something doesn’t fit right, will they make alterations free of charge?

Conclusion

In my journey to find a tailor, from discovering possibilities on YouTube to hiring an online tailor, technology played an important role.

When choosing a tailor, it's important to consider a number of factors: reviews, expertise, communication skills, pricing, turnaround time, understanding of your fitting preferences, a comprehensive portfolio, and any guarantees they offer. I found Silailor, and you can also try them.
